CHROMOSOME COMPLEMENT OF THE INDIAN PEARL OYSTER PINCTADA FUCATA (GOULD)

Abstract
The chromosome number (n = 14, 2n = 28) of the Indian pearl oysterPinctada fucata (Gould) is reported for the first time. It conforms with *he chromosome
number reported for P. fucata martensii from Japan and P. imhricata
from the Atlantic. It is suggested that, as in the cases of Crassostrea spp., genus ;
Pinctada may exhibit conservativeness in chromosome number.
