Collagen plays a key role in ovarian function, influencing various aspects of ovarian health and development. It provides structural support, follicular development, ovulation, corpus luteum development, cell signalling, and migration. The present study aimed to study the distribution and quantification of collagen fibres in the ovaries of the goats during the summer and winter seasons. Ovaries from six goats each during the summer and winter seasons were collected from the local abattoir and processed for paraffin sectioning using a routine acetone-benzene schedule. The paraffin sections were stained with picrosirius red stain for collagen fibres. The stained sections were viewed under light and fluorescent microscopes and quantified using ImageJ software. The collagen fibres were distributed variably in different compartments of the ovaries of goats. Collagen fibres were observed in the tunica albuginea layer around various types of follicles, interfollicular areas, and medulla. In the antral follicles, collagen fibres were restricted to the theca layers. The distribution of collagen in the ovulatory area depicted that collagen was responsible for pushing the cumulus oophorus complex. Quantitatively, collagen was higher in the cortex than in the medulla. The cortex contained a higher collagen area during summer than winter, while no difference was observed in the medulla during summer and winter. In conclusion, our study establishes a link between the quantity of collagen fibres in the ovarian cortex and the season.
