Comparative evaluation of graded dietary levels of L-Methionine against DL-Methionine in broiler chicken
18
Abstract
Abstract: The research trial was performed to determine the effect of supplementation of L-Methionine at various levels as against DL-Methionine on growth performance, carcass traits and blood biochemical profile. Commercial strain “Cobb-400Y” chicks were allocated into four groups viz T0, T1, T2 and T3, each with 60 chicks divided into 4 replicates of 15 birds each. Chicks from control group (T0) were fed with DL-Methionine sufficient to satisfy the requirement of dietary methionine as per BIS (2007). Group T1, T2 and T3 were supplemented with L-Methionine by replacing 100%, 75% and 50% DL-Methionine, respectively, in the diet. Group T0 served as control group, receiving DL-Methionine at 0.18% for pre-starter and starter and 0.15% for finisher phases, respectively. Group T1 was administered L-Methionine at 0.18% for pre-starter and starter and 0.15% for finisher phases, respectively. Group T2 received L-Methionine at 0.135% for pre-starer and starter phase while 0.112% for finisher phase and group T3 received L-Methionine at 0.09% for pre-starter and starter phase and 0.075% for finisher phase. The diets were formulated to be iso-caloric and iso-nitrogenous.
The average weekly body weights, body weight gain, feed consumption, feed conversion ratio and carcass traits of experimental birds showed no statistical difference (p>0.05) among the groups. However, group T3 showed poor FCR. Blood biochemical profile including serum total protein and globulin levels showed significant differences, with the highest values observed in group T1 compared to other groups. Serum albumin and serum Albumin:Globulin ratio showed non-significant difference. Based on the results, L-Methionine supplementation performed similarly to DL-Methionine.
