Pathogenic microflora associated with marine fishes of Satpati fishing centre in Maharashtra

Abstract
Fifteen ma~ne fish samples were collected from Satpati fishing centre, marketand cooperative societies and also from Palghar market during April, 1995,
for preliminary screening of microbes. Mackerel (Rastrelliger kanagurta),
clupeid (Thryssa sp.), Bombay duck (Harpodon nehereus), and prawns (Penaeus
indicus and P. malcolmsonii) are more prone to a variety of microbial
contaminations. Out of the total of 53 isolates from the samples, Escherichia
coli was :34%, followed by Salmonella typhosa 23%, Shigella sp. 15%, and
Klebsiella Ilerogenes, 11 %. The association of these microbes with marine
fishes is discussed.
