PREVALENCE, CLINICAL AND HEMATO-BIOCHEMICAL EVALUATION OF CANINE PYOMETRA

Canine pyometra is a common reproductive disorder of female dogs associated with a multi-systemic illness and requires early diagnosis and medical or surgical intervention. The present study aimed to determinethe prevalence of pyometra during the period from March 2025 to 2026 and the incidence associated with age, breed, parity, stage of estrus and type of pyometra was recorded and analyzed. During the study period, a total of 211 female dogs were presented to the Gynecological ward, of which 44 were diagnosed with pyometra, yielding a prevalence of 20%. Occurrence of pyometra was higher inthe age group 7-9 years, Indianspitz breed, nulliparous andin the diestrus stage. Open pyometra was more common than that of closed pyometra. Of 44 pyometra affected cases, 15 dogswere subjected to detailed clinical, haematological and biochemical evaluation and a statistically significant difference was found when compared to healthier dogs. Vaginal discharges were the predominant clinical sign, while Leukocytosis with marked neutrophilia was a classical feature of pyometra. This study provided insight into the occurrence, clinical and diagnostics characteristics of the canine pyometra.
