The study examined the role of clcistothccia in annual recurrence of wheat powdery mildew in North India. Cleistotheeia of Erysiphe graminis f. sp. trltici, collected from different agro-climatic regions of Himaehal Pradesh, eontaincd asci but no ascosporcs. Ascosporcs did not develop upto one year under different storage conditions. Dormant mycelium and conidia were not effective in initiating infection in susceptible wheat cultivars. However, ascospores developed in cleistothecia collected from Kukumseri (Lahaul Valley) within six days without any specific treatment. Actively sporulating pathogen was available throughout the year in different agro-clirnatic regions of Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. This implies that cleistothecia are a source of primary inoculum in temperate regions like Lahaul and Spiti, whereas in other areas of North India, conidia are a source of primary inoculum and the pathogen occurs in conidial stage throughout the year.
