Carbendazim upto a concentration of 500 mg ks" had no effect on the growth of Rhizobium sp (groundnut strain '6050) in-uilro on agar medium. The plants raised from seed treated with carbendazim (500 mg a.i. kg-I seed) and grown under green house conditions in symbiotic relationship with Rhizobium inoculated just prior to or 18 hours before sowing showed a significant increase in nodulation, nitrogen fixation capacity of roots, growth characters and yield of the plants as compared to untreated checks and those raised from seed inoculated only with Rhizobium. There was no loss of biological efficacy of the seed applied carbendazim by Rhizobium as measured by incidence of seed and seedling rot caused by Macrophomina Phaseolina
