CONSTRAINTS, ISSUES AND SUGGESTIVE FRAMEWORK FOR FISHERY BASED STRATEGIC EMPOWERMENT OF RURAL WOMEN: A STUDY IN MANIPUR
145 / 2
Abstract
Conscious efforts to address the gender issues in aquaculture sector and more involvement of women through explicit support to their participation are yet to be undertaken intensively in India. Although women are reportedly better placed in Manipur state as compared to the other parts of India, there are many issues that need to be addressed to improve their empowerment through involvement in fisheries activities. Therefore, the study was conducted to know the level of participation of women in fisheries activities in Manipur, India. One hundred and twenty women fish farmers formed the sample for the study. A structured interview schedule was used to collect the information through personal interview. Lack of access and control over resources (1.80), low access to credit (1.74), lack of confidence in technical issues (1.60), lack of women friendly aquaculture technology (1.50) and limited access to training and extension services (1.42) were the major constraints in empowerment of women through participation in fisheries activities. Contribution of women in fisheries needs to be emphasised by the local Government. This will act as an incentive to motivate the women in further development. Awards, women fish farmers' day, etc. may be initiated by the development organisations for recognition and encouragement of women in fisheries sector.
Key words: Women empowerment; constraints; strategies; fisheries; gender issues, Manipur
