BREEDING AND LARVAL REARING OF HETEROPNUESTES FOSSILIS (BLOCH) FED ON DIFFERENT LIVE AND DRY DIETS

Abstract
Study was conducted to observe the breeding success and impact of various diets on larval rearing of Heteropnuestes fossilis (Bloch). Brooders were successfully induced bred (without sacrifying male) during the month of July by using a synthetic inducing agent 'ovaprim' (@ 0.8 - 1.0 ml/kg body weight) with an average fecundity/g body weight of 154 (73-236) and hatching percentage of 75 (40-100), respectively. Egg diameter of the fertilized eggs varied from 0.60 - 0.85 mm. Three day old larvae were fed on 10 diets (live and dry) for 15 days. Mixed zooplankton and egg yolk feeding resulted in 80 % larval survival, whereas in all the other diets (dry), overall survival ranged from 5 - 60 %. However, late acceptance of dry diets by the larvae was observed as mortality rate decreased after 10 days. Water quality parameters during breeding as well as larval feeding were found to be in the optimum range.
