Abstract

Fisheries and aquaculture are important economic activities in Tripura. The current level of fish production in the state is not able to meet the burgeoning demand. Therefore it is urgently necessary to increase the fish production in the state by identifying the extent of knowledge and adoption gap of improved production practices among farmers. In this direction, the present study was conducted during 2010 in two districts i.e. South Tripura and West Tripura. A total of 200 fish farmers were interviewed. The study revealed that the knowledge index was 54.25 and maximum knowledge gap was found in water exchange and quality monitoring, followed by fish handling, storage, transportation, liming and feed management. The overall adoption index in the study area was 59.74. Adoption was less in five practices viz, use of aerators, feeding, liming, water exchange and quality monitoring and stocking. The study suggests for encouragment to the farmers for formation of farmer-group, as group dynamics encourages farmers to adopt scientific fish production practices.

Key words : Fish production practices, knowledge index, adoption index, Tripura.
