Abstract

Ornamental fishes play an important role in the world fish trade (Singh and Ahmed, 2005). The growing interest in aquarium fishes has boosted their trade globally. The global ornamental fish trade is estimated to be US $ 14 Billion (FAO, 2004). The United States lead the import market followed by EU and Japan. (Chapman, 2000; FAO, 1996-2005). The Asian countries export more than 50% of aquarium fishes globally. Singapore is the epicentre of trade and largest exporter of ornamental fishes in the world. Sri Lanka is currently leading among South Asian countries. The global retail value of live ornamental fish in 2000 was estimated to be over US $3,000 million (Whittington and Chong, 2007).
