Abstract

The two oxbow lakes, Kulia and Saguna in West Bengal were investigated during 2005 to 2007. Inspite of their close proximity, well marked variations in water quality, plankton community and fisheries were observed. The high dissolved oxygen content of Kulia lake (12.3 ± 2.11 mg l-1) in comparison to Saguna lake attributed to phytoplankton bloom. A positive association of primary production with alkalinity resulted to high total alkalinity level in Kulia lake. Both the dissolved inorganic nutrients (nitrate nitrogen and phosphate) were at higher level in Kulia lake. Diverse plankton dominance was observed among the two lakes. High fish production and species richness in Saguna lake might be due to prevalence of favourable environment and trophic status for better growth and species compatibility.

Key words : Oxbow lake, water quality, plankton, fisheries, environmental influence
