Abstract

Fish samples of Labeo rohita (Hamilton), Labeo calbasu (Hamilton) and Tor tor (Hamilton) were collected seasonally during 2003-2004 from the rivers Ken, Paisuni and Tons (Vindhyan region). In L. rohita and L. calbasu percentage and ratio of males was higher than females in 1+, 2+ and 5+ and 1+, 2+, 3+ and 5+ age groups respectively. In case of T. tor percentage and ratio of males was higher than females in the higher age groups (2+, 4+ and 5+). The difference, however, was statistically non-significant (P<0.05) in all age groups in both species. In L. calbasu all values except 4+ age groups were non-significant. The ratio of these species has not deviated from the expected 1:1 despite high levels of exploitation. From the viewpoint of population structure males dominated almost all age groups, especially in Labeo sp. In L. calbasu the significant sex ratio in 4+ age group only indicates some disturbance in the population structure.
