Abstract

Indian snow trout, Schizothorax richardsonii is distributed in fast flowing torrential snow-fed streams, rivers and lakes in various altitudes of the Himalayas. Developed fifteen microsatellite markers from approximately 32923-expressed sequence tags (ESTs) of common carp, Cyprinus carpio and evaluated eight of them in 42 unrelated specimens of S. richardsonii. The number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 to 6. The observed heterozygosity (Ho ) ranged from 0.099-0.937 and the expected heterozygosity (He ) ranged from 0.675-0.755. Because of high level of polymorphism the microsatellite markers reported here would be useful to study population genetics and linkage mapping of Indian snow trout.

Keywords: Indian snow trout, Schizothorax richardsonii, expressed sequence tag (EST), microsatellite markers
