Different types of drugs and chemicals have become an essential part of aquaculture production in West Bengal. The present study was conducted to know the current status of commercial aqua-drugs and chemicals application in fish-ponds and different associated issues. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview schedule from 80 respondents. Focus group discussions were also conducted with the aqua-drugs and chemicals dealers of Moyna block Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal. It was identified that fish farmers were using various kinds of chemicals like disinfectants, oxygen-supplier, antibiotics, growth-promoters, probiotics, toxic gas removers, digestive-enzymes, predator/insect/algae killers, etc. in their pond. The research-findings will assist policymakers and development-organisations to have some idea regarding the extent of aqua drugs and chemicals in aquaculture so that effective extension programmes can be planned and executed to aware farmers about appropriate dose and application method of the drugs for safe and sustainable aquaculture practices.
