Studies on phytoplankton diversity and abundance were carried out in river Ganga at Sangam and Rasulabad ghat from April to May 2023. A total of 71 phytoplankton species were documented belonging to Chlorophyta (38), Heterokontophyta (23), Cryptophyta (1), Cyanobacteria (8) and Ochrophyta (1). The highest species richness was recorded in Rasulabad ghat (65 spp) than in Sangam (48 spp). The dominance of Chlorophyta at both sampling sites indicated higher organic pollution and anthropogenic disturbance. However, higher species richness and lower abundance in Rasulabad ghat indicated comparatively less pollution than in other sites.
