Abstract

The present study aimed to determine the sedative effect of ethanolic extract of Datura stramonium leaves on common carp (Cyprinus carpio). The fish were divided into seven experimental groups and anesthetized with extract doses of 0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0 mg l-1 for a total duration of 48 hours. The results displayed a significant difference (p<0.05) between the groups subjected to varying concentrations of the extract. An increase in anesthetic concentration significantly reduced induction time but prolonged recovery time in the fish (p<0.05). No mortality was observed in the control group (without sedative) and the 0.5 mgl-1 dosage. However, doses above 0.5 mgl-1 resulted in mortality rates ranging from 3.3% to 23.33%. Water temperature showed no significant variation among groups, while dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and CO2 levels were affected by anesthetic doses (p<0.05). The findings suggest that the ethanolic
extract of D. stramonium leaves has potential as a sedative for fish. Based on the study data, a concentration of 0.5 mgl-1 is recommended for safe and successful transportation of common carp without causing mortality.
