Fish skin mucus, a complex and dynamic biological secretion, plays a crucial role in the physiology and ecology of these aquatic organisms. In this mini-review, we are providing an overview of the diverse properties of the fish skin mucus, elaborating its multifunctional aspects in the life of fishes. The fish skin mucus is a complex mixture of proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and other bioactive compounds. The structural organization of the skin mucus helps in interactions with the surrounding environment, emphasizing its role as a protective barrier against pathogens, parasites, and environmental stressors. Various properties of the skin mucus of fishes make them applicable for medicinal and cosmetic industries. Therefore, the potential applications of fish skin mucus for biotechnological research and products, including drug discovery, biomaterial developments, and environmental monitoring, are highlighted briefly here.
