Trends in climate change and sustainable open water fisheries: the Indian scenario

Abstract

India is confronted with the challenge of maintaining its fast pace of economic growth, as the threat of climate change is growing. Having an economy that is highly dependent on the natural resource base and climate-sensitive sectors, agriculture, forestry and fisheries, the impacts of climate change are expected to pose new challenges besides worsening the existing ones to affect livelihoods and food security. India has expressed these concerns in the recently submitted climate action plan of the country, known as the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDC) to the UNFCC. India has already committed to reducing its carbon emission intensity by 33-35% in 2030 by comparison to the carbon emission of the year 2005 and has demanded a full-scale and fair climate change treaty in the Paris Summit on climate change in December.
