Abstract

The present study investigated the reproductive traits of Tenualosa ilisha during the winter breeding season (November 2024-February 2025) downstream of the Farakka Barrage, Ganga River. A total of 310 individuals were randomly collected during the study period, with males ranging from 14 to 21.9 cm and females ranging from 14.8 to 20.1 cm, respectively. Monthly variations in morphometric traits, gonadosomatic index (GSI) in males and females, and fecundity were analyzed in female specimens below the minimum legal size. Gonadal maturation revealed a progressive increase from November to February, with significantly higher GSI observed in males and females and fecundity observed in females. Both absolute and relative fecundity increased toward February, indicating peak maturation. The results suggest early maturation and highlight winter as an active reproductive phase of Hilsa in the study region.
