Abstract
Water is fundamental to all forms of life and is essential for functioning of natural ecosystems and societies. The availability of inland freshwater resources, primarily rivers, reservoirs, lakes, canals and groundwater, varies considerably across regions due to differences in climate, topography, geology, and land use. India, characterized by a monsoonal climate, receives more than 75 percent of its annual rainfall during the four summer monsoon months, resulting in pronounced temporal and spatial variations in water availability.
