Abstract

Small indigenous fishes are valuable fishery resources as well as important to biodiversity of fish fauna. There is general observation that biodiversity of
fish species in West Bengal has been declining during the past few decades. In the present experiment, five different beels of south Bengal were selected for both qualitative as well as quantitative study of fish population. Appropriate gears were used for netting a unit area of each beel to get quantitative and qualitative data of fish funa inhabiting these water bodies. Data thus collected was used to calculate Shannon-weaver index, relative abundance, species richness, species evenness. Comparison of these indices showed sharp decline in species diversity of some beels.High stocking density and repeated netting in culture based capture fisheries practiced in beels also showed the adverse effect of aquaculture pressure in small indigenous fish population

Keywords Shannon weaver index, Simpson index, Biodiversity, Species richness, Rank abundance.
