Abstract

Castor (Ricinus communis L.) is the sole species in the genus Ricinus, belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. This plant thrives in diverse ecological regions, often succeeding where other crops cannot. The yield disparity between farmer-managed fields and research centers is mainly due to inadequate management practices affected by various stresses. The field experiment was performed at CCS HAU, Regional Research Station, Bawal, Rewari, India during kharif season 2021 with 19 castor genotypes grown in randomized block design with three replications. The number of days to 50% flowering of first raceme, number of days to maturity of first raceme, number of capsules/primary spike, number of effective spikes/plant, effective primary spike length (cm), 100-seed weight (g), oil content (%) and seed yield (q/ha) showed wide range of variability. The highest seed yield was in SHB-1062 (42.56 q/ha) followed by ANDCH-1735 (42.55 q/ha) and ICH-239 (41.25 q/ha). The minimum yield was recorded in DC-107 (21.05 q/ha). Seed yield was positively correlated with oil content (0.52), number of capsules (0.29), and effective length of primary raceme (0.35). Cluster-I had the highest mean for the number of capsules (104), effective length (82), and seed yield (40.48 q/ha), but a minimum for days to 50% flowering (56 days). Cluster-II had the lowest days to maturity (108 days), highest effective spikes/plant (12.60), and 100-seed weight (48.26 g).
