Abstract

Castor (Ricinus communis L.) is an important non-edible oilseed crop widely cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions and valued for its high oil content and industrial applications. However, its productivity is significantly affected by insect pests, among which the castor semilooper, Achaea janata L. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a major defoliator causing severe economic losses. The pest is polyphagous and widely distributed, exhibiting a complete metamorphosis with egg, larval, pupal and adult stages, with the larval stage being the most destructive. Infestation leads to extensive defoliation, often resulting in skeletonization of leaves, thereby drastically reducing photosynthetic capacity and yield, with reported losses ranging from 20 to 50% under severe conditions. The incidence is generally high during peak vegetative stages, particularly between July to September. This review highlights the biology, seasonal incidence, damage potential and host range of A. janata, along with an overview of management strategies. Integrated Pest Management (IPM), combining cultural practices, biological control agents (parasitoids, predators and microbial biopesticides), botanicals and need-based chemical interventions, has been emphasized as an effective and sustainable approach for managing semilooper populations while, minimizing environmental risks and resistance development.
