Abstract

The leaf or brown rust of wheat caused by the fungus Puccinia triticina f.sp tritici is an important constraint for wheat production worldwide. Resistance to an array of leaf rust pathotypes and genetics of resistance to three pathotypes of P. recondita f. sp. tritici, 77-1 (109R63), 104B (29R23) and 106 (0R9) was studied in four Indian bread wheat cultivars namely HS 507, HW 5216, PBW 590, and WH 1021 during four consecutive years from 201011-12 to 2014-15. Segregation of seedlings for susceptibility in F2 to above leaf rust pathotypes revealed the presence of three dominant independent genes for resistance each in HS 507 and PBW 590, two dominant independent genes for resistance in each HW 5216 and in WH 1021. F2 seedlings of reciprocal crosses of above cultivars also supported the above findings. Analysis of BC1 and BC2 with pathotype 106 (0R9) confirmed the above number of genes. Absence of susceptible segregants in F2 seedlings of all intercrosses of resistant parents (diallele crosses) to pathotype 106 (0R9) indicating the presence of at least one common gene in these test cultivars. Lr1 and Lr23 genes in PBW 590, Lr1 gene in each cultivar HS 507, HW 5216 and HW 1021, were confirmed on the basis of allelic test.
