Abstract

Amaranthus leaf blight is an economically important disease resulting in considerable yield loss. Continuous application of fungicides results in human hazards and environmental pollution. The present work is a pioneer attempt in exploring the antifungal potential of bovine based organic preparations against the disease. Among the various organic indigenous preparations, turmeric powder (4g) + baking soda (1g) mixture in diluted cow’s urine (local breed), jeevamrutham (10%) and diluted cow’s urine (local breed) (1:9 dilution) were effective in reducing the leaf spot intensity by 93, 65 and 64 per cent respectively. Root dipping of the seedlings with these preparations at transplanting was also found to be effective. These treatments were found to be on par with the fungicide check (Dithane M45), which signifies the possibility of using them as substitutes/alternatives to pesticides. This opens up new avenues for an effective, cheap, safe and eco friendly disease management strategy with least pesticide residues.
