Abstract

Tulsi (Ocimum Sp.) is an erect sweet-scented, pubescent herb, with multiphareous utilities. Its many species are used in modern as well as in traditional system of medicine. It’s essential oil is commercially important, besides its leaves are directly consumed as part of tea and crude extract. Wide ranges of plant pathogens have been reported to cause diseases in these plants, among them, viruses are major constraints in their cultivation. Cucumber mosaic virus has been reported to cause mosaic disease in O. basilicum and O. sanctum L. lucerne mosaic virus (Alfalfa mosaic virus), tomato spotted wilt virus, pepino mosaic virus, broad bean wilt virus have been reported to naturally infect O. basilicum L. suggesting that the plant is relatively more susceptible to many viruses. Screened 6 species of Ocimum comprising 79 genotypes. It was found that a leaf curl disease with mosaic is affecting O. basilicum, which is suspected to be member of family Geminiviridae. An efficient antagonist and growth promoter – Pseudomonas monteilii (a native strain CRC1, accession no. HQ995498) was isolated from the rhizosphere of medicinal plant Coleus forskohlii. Screening of O. basilicum and its other lines was carried out using strain CRC1 to see its effect on disease severity/ rate of disease incidence of the yellow leaf curl disease. Investigation has also been carried out to evaluate the available germplasms of Ocimum spp. for identifying resistance source. Since O. basilicum was found to be highly susceptible to above virus disease, few lines have been selected which were found to be tolerant against the leaf curl disease. These studies will help in strategizing the effective management practices and developing resistant cultivars of Ocimum.
