During the quarantine processing of 100 apple saplings, Malus domestica imported from The Netherlands at ICAR-NBPGR, New Delhi, India, live Pratylenchus penetrans were intercepted. This species has not been reported in apple trees or nurseries in India, therefore quarantine procedure was followed for salvaging of nematode infected planting material. Infected saplings were given root dip treatment with formaldehyde solution to eliminate nematode infection and released for planting in greenhouse conditions. After 3, 4 and 12 months, post-entry quarantine inspections were conducted on treated saplings grown in pots filled with steam sterilized soil and in the field. It was observed that all the samples were free from P. penetrans after testing by standard procedures. Thus, present study highlights the importance of quarantine in interception and salvaging of P. penetrans from imported apple saplings and preventing the introduction of nematode into the apple growing regions of the country.Downloads
