Abstract

An array of indigenous organic preparations was tested under in vitro, in vivo and field conditions for the management of leaf blight disease of amaranthus. In vitro studies revealed that fermented egg-lemon juice extract (10%) and a novel formulation viz., fermented extract of the weed, Setaria barbata resulted in 100 and 87 per cent inhibition of the mycelial growth of Rhizoctonia solani respectively. In vivo studies also revealed that these extracts resulted in 78 and 85 per cent reduction in the disease incidence respectively. Under field trial, both the extracts resulted in maximum inhibition of the disease and were on par with the fungicide check. Thus, the present study brings to light the scope for use of these novel indigenous products for eco friendly disease management. The production of these biopesticides may be commercialized as an enterprise by self help groups for better livelihood, self employment and ecofriendly disease management.
