Abstract

Grape is an important fruit crop of India with a production of 2.58 x 103 thousand MT in the year 2013-14 from 1.18 x 102 thousand hectares cultivated area. Downy mildew caused by Plasmopara viticola (Berk. & Curt.) Berl. & de Toni is the most important disease of grapes which has serious implications in the national economy. Under favorable conditions, around 60 to 100% crop loss due to downy mildew can occur which might lead to a financial loss of 4 to 10 lakh rupees/acre in single season. Several groups of fungicides like Quinone outside Inhibitors, Carboxylic Acid Amides, Phenyl Amide group etc. are targeted against the pathogen but fungicide resistance by this pathogen has compelled the search towards new molecules with new chemistry having an alternative mode of action. In this perspective a Quinone inside Inhibitors (QiI), amisulbrom, was evaluated both in vitro and in vivo against the P. viticola. Leaf disc biological assay showed EC50 value of amisulbrom against P. viticola isolates was less than 0.1 µg/ml. Field experiments were conducted during the fruiting season of October-April 2013-14 at Bedag, district Sangli and 2014-15 at Dhondgavanwadi, district Nashik, Maharashtra, to study the efficacy of a formulation containing amisulbrom 20% SC, for the control of downy mildew on grapes. The new fungicide amisulbrom at 375 ml/ ha was considered as an effective dose to control the downy mildew of grapevine on leaves and bunches and increase yield. The untreated control recorded PDI in the range of 8.43-59.56 during different seasons and amisulbrom treatment significantly reduced the disease exhibiting a PDI of 0.00-18.19. In amisulbrom treatment harvestable yield was recorded in the range of 19.07-19.68 kg per vine as compared to 8.43-14.59 kg per vine yields in untreated control during different seasons. In the events of higher pressure, the new product can effectively be employed in the management of downy mildew in grapevine ecosystem as well as to tackle the development of resistance by pathogens to conventional fungicides.
