Abstract

Phosphorus and Potassium are the major nutrients needed by the plants for their proper growth and development. They play a vital role in all the metabolic processes, the ability of a few soil microorganisms to convert insoluble forms of phosphorus to an accessible form is an important trait in plant growth-promoting bacteria for increasing plant yields. The use of phosphate solubilising and potassium solubilising bacteria as inoculants increases the P and K uptake by plants, but in most of the tropical soils these minerals are found in the bound form. This study aims to isolate and identify such mineral solubilising microbes from industrial areas around Jabalpur which can solubilise phosphate and potassium from natural sources like Rock Phosphate, Mica etc and their biochemical and morphological characterization which would help in enhancement of growth in economically important forest species like teak.
