The climate of low hill zone of Himachal Pradesh is suitable for the cultivation of different species of mushrooms round the year. Mushroom cultivation although requires a specially built mushroom house due to its sensitivity towards a group of growing conditions, but the farmers in subtropical zone of the state are marginal farmers with small land holdings and thus cannot opt for hi-tech mushroom cultivation. Keeping this in view, an effort was made to cultivate different mushroom species in a bamboo hut with almost uncontrolled or marginally controlled atmosphere during the year 2013, 2014 and 2015 at Research Farm, College of Horticulture and Forestry, Dr. Y.S. Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Neri, Hamirpur (HP). An experiment was conducted in the natural bamboo hut for the standardization of time and technique for cultivation of Agaricus bisporus, Pleurotus sajor-caju and Pleurotus florida during different seasons of the year. The cultivation of Agaricus bisporus was started in the last week of October and first week of November during 2013 and 2014, respectively while that of P. sajor-caju and P. florida was started in the second fortnight of February and first week of August, respectively during the year 2014 and 2015. Data in terms of time taken for spawn run and pinning as well as mushroom yield were recorded in all the trials. The time taken for spawn run was prolonged up to 25 days in different species during both the years due to uncontrolled conditions prevailing in the hut. During both the growing seasons, crop of A.bisporus lasted up to end of March and that of P. sajor-caju and P. florida lasted up to May and October, respectively. The average yield per 10 Kg compost bag in case of A. bisporus was found to be 1.685 Kg while, in case of P. sajor-caju and P. florida, it was found to be 1.562 and 1.375 Kg, respectively. It was concluded that the three species of mushroom could be grown in different parts of the year in natural hut which could improve the economy of the growers.Downloads
