This laboratory study evaluated the efficacy of plant-based neutral silica as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides for protecting stored redgram (Cajanus cajan) seeds against the pulse beetle, Callosobruchus chinensis. Redgram seeds were treated with varying concentrations of neutral silica alongside a chemical check (deltamethrin) and stored in HDPE bags for nine months under ambient conditions. Seed quality parameters, insect mortality, and adult emergence were regularly monitored. The results demonstrated that neutral silica significantly reduced insect infestation and seed damage while maintaining high seed germination and physiological vigour. Ultimately, plant-based neutral silica serves as a safe, cost-effective, and sustainable grain protectant.
