Abstract

Three species of Colletotrichum, C. capsici, C. truncatum, and C. lindemuthianum, isolated from fields of the College of Agriculture, Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh were characterized based on morphological, cultural, and physiological characteristics. C. capsici and C. truncatum produced fusiform, hyaline, aseptate conidia with a single oil globule, whereas C. lindemuthianum produced oblong, aseptate conidia with one or two oil globules. The conidial dimensions were 22–24 × 4–5 μm, 13–22 × 3.2–5.1 μm, and 12–16 × 3.5–5.0 μm for C. capsici, C. truncatum, and C. lindemuthianum, respectively. Optimum mycelial growth and sporulation occurred at 25°C in C. capsici and C. truncatum and at 30°C in C. lindemuthianum. Maximum growth was observed under alternate light and dark conditions. The optimum pH was 6.5 for C. capsici and C. truncatum and 7.0 for C. lindemuthianum. Potato dextrose agar supported the maximum mycelial growth and sporulation among the media tested.
