Abstract

Host race status of 11 populations of Heterodera cajani from eight states viz. Delhi, Haryana, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh, was evaluated. Suitability of pigeon pea - Cajanus cajan (UPAAS 120), sunn
hemp, Crotalaria juncea (Local), cluster bean - Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (HG-258), cowpea - Vigna unguiculata (Pusa komal), sesame -
Sesamum indicum (TMV -7), green gram - Vigna radiata (Pusa 672), black gram - Vigna mungo (LBG 402) and soybean - Glycine max (JS
335) as a host for H. cajani populations was assessed. All populations multiplied on pigeon pea, sesame, cowpea, green gram,
black gram and soybean. None multiplied on cluster bean and only one population from Bhiwani multiplied on crotalaria. Ten populations did not multiply on cluster bean and crotalaria and were designated as race 2 as per the race numbers designated by
Siddiqui and Mahamood, 1993. Only Bhiwani population did not multiply on cluster bean thus constituting a separate race (designated as race 3). Race 1 multiplying on cluster bean, crotalaria and also sesame was not found in 11 populations of H. cajani studied.
