It is now widely accepted that, for India, sound agricultural development is essential to achieve overall economic progress. Because, India has an expanding population of one billion to feed, has over two-thirds of its national work force directly or indirectly dependent on agriculture ·and has an agricultural sector which generates 25.2 per cent of total GDP (1997-98) and over 15 per cent of its exports, its economy is particularly dependent on sustained and healthy agricultural growth. The agricultural sector has been successful over the past four decades in keeping pace with rising demand for food. In the year 1991, the country entered the new era of globalisation and economic liberalisation, and is bound to have an impact on future land use and production patterns. This shift may also be environmentally desirable, as the producers will concentrate more on quality of production through cost effectiveness.
