The Inland fisheries sector is critical to the country’s economy, making substantial contributions to employment, foreign exchange gains, food and nutritional security, notably for the rural poor, and greater access to protein-rich food for all of them. With its numerous rivers and plentiful water resources, India has a complex aquatic ecosystem that supports a vast range of marine and freshwater species. Since its independence, the country has seen consistent and sustained increases in fish production. The sector has enormous output potential, especially for inland aquaculture and culture-based fisheries resources. The fisheries sector has seen significant transformation throughout the years, owing to technological advancements and modernization. While these developments have provided countless benefits.
