Abstract

Shiitake mushroom is a meaty tasting edible fungus of the Orient world. Production of shiitake mushroom has increased faster than any other specialty mushroom with the proven therapeutic benefits. With its increasing popularity, shiitake occupies the first position in total mushroom production at global level. With systematic breeding efforts and an improved production practices developed by Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR)-Directorate Mushroom Research (DMR),Solan resulted in identification and further development of three prominent high yielding strains viz.,DMRO-388s, DMRO-38 and DMRO-356 in this specialty mushroom. These strains helped to increase the shiitake mushroom production from nowhere to 2000 tons in India within in a span of five years. At the existing market prices, these strains has generated an estimated gross revenue of Rs. 14.8 crores during 2019-20 with a total contribution of 63% to the total shiitake mushroom production in India.
