Abstract

Two strains of Pleurotus ostreatus and one of  P. sajor-caju were cultivated on cotton waste, wheat straw and paddy straw to determine the effect of these agrowastes on biological efficiency, carbohydrate and mineral contents including Na, K, Ca, Cu, Zn and Fe.  P. sajorcaju showed maximum biological efficiency (195.9%) on wheat straw.  P. ostreatus (gray strain) fruit bodies obtained from paddy straw had maximum Na (0.189 g/100 g), whereas K was maximum in P. sajor-caju (4.58 g/100 g) cultivated on paddy straw followed by wheat straw and cotton waste.  Ca was high in P. sajor-caju on all substrates.  P. ostreatus cultivated on paddy straw showed maximum amount of Cu (0.009 g/100 g) while maximum amount of Zn was found (0.017 g/100 g) in all strains grown on wheat straw.  Carbohydrate content in general was high in all strains cultivated on paddy straw, it being maximum (72.16 g/100 g) in P. ostreatus (white strain).
