1189 / 806
Abstract
The catfish Pangasius pangasius contributed to an average annual catch of5!.7 t from the reservoir during 1976-80. The average length of fish in the catch
was much below the length at maturity. The fish, which have been aged with the
aid of pectoral spines, were in the main in the age groups III, IV and V. Females
were predominant in the population beyond age VI. The difference in growth rate
was not significant between sexes, but the length-weight relationship differed
significantly. Mature specimens were noted in sizes beyond 630 mm total length.
A single mode of mature eggs was found in> a fuMy mature ovary. As against its
reported omnivorous habit, the fish were found preferimgly feeding on molluscs,
switching over to other items only n'in absence of molluscs
