Abstract

The present investigation was carried out to study different progeny selection procedures, viz., half-sib (HS), full-sib (FS) and selfed (S 1) for intra-population improvement in a pearl millet composite population HHVBC PCV5. For this purpose, genetic variability and expected genetic advance were calculated among three types of families. The number of progeny in each group was 55. These three types of progenies together with base population and checks were evaluated for the yield and three component traits. The values of GCV and PCV recorded were higher for the panicle surface area. The estimates of heritability and expected genetic advance were observed to be the highest for grain yield. Whereas, panicle girth exhibited lowest values of GCV, PCV, heritability and per cent expected genetic advance. S, progeny appeared to be the best selection procedure as compared to half-sib and full-sib selection procedures for improving grain yield and the panicle characters as S, progenies exhibited higher values for mean, GCV, PCV, heritability and expected genetic advance than HS and FS progenies.
