Abstract

India's camel population has rapidly declined in the last several decades. This paper examines the causes and implications of this development and reports some of the experiences gained during a community-based support project for Raika camel breeders and concludes that such local activities are not sufficient to conserve the camel.. An overall enabling policy framework and the reservation of grazing areas throughout the state are required, if the camel is to remain a viable component of India's agricultural biodiversity.
