Water Pollution from Wet Processing of Cotton-Based Textiles and Strategies for Its Mitigation: A Review

Wet processing involves all the activities which take place in aqueous medium after fabric formation. It includes singeing, desizing, scouring, bleaching, dyeing, printing and finishing. Each of the process involved in the wet processing uses water and contributes to specific pollutants in the cotton textile industry. These pollutants badly affects the quality of effluent water by increasing the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), alkalinity, pH, total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity and heavy metals and residual colour. The current review presents the various pollutants involved in each process and possible mitigation strategies for each pollutant.References
