Investigations on grafting of aonla on 5-6 months old root stocks raised in poly-bags were carried out at National Research Centre for Agroforestry, Jhansi using capping technique during July-August, 2001. Present investigation suggested that aonla seedlings have sharp tapering (around 7%) from base to 3 cm height. Thereafter, it declined to 4-2% upto 5 cm height and gave almost uniform stem diameter. This restricts graft height at around 3.0 cm. Average diameter of stock at this height (3.0 cm) was 0.5 cm. Softwood cleft grafting on such stocks gave 70-90% graft success in different lots. It was also observed that scion thickness should be slightly more (0.1 cm) than that of root stock at graft height' for maximum success (91 %). Equal thickness of rootstock and scion produced 85% success. The scion shoot should be semi-hard and greenish brown in colour for highest graft success. Herbaceous scion gave poor success (18%) followed by hard scion wood, dark brown in colour (52%).
