Growth and productivity of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum) hybrids in rainfed areas under lower hills of north-western Himalayas in Jammu and Kashmir

The present study was aimed to assess the production potential and performance of 20 released pearl millet [Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] hybrids in sandy loam soils under rainfed conditions of Jammu performed under ICAR-All India Co-Ordinated Research Project on Pearl millet (Cooperating Centre) at Advanced Centre for Rainfed Agriculture, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Jammu, Rakh Dhiansar, Samba, Jammu and Kashmir during rainy (kharif) season of 2019 and 2020. Significantly higher growth characters, viz. plant height (179.7 cm), effective tillers/plant (1.63); yield attributing parameters like panicle length (23.9 cm), panicle diameter (3.2 cm) and test-weight (12.43 g) were recorded in hybrid GHB 732. However, significantly higher grain
and biological yields (3,258 and 13,971 kg/ha) was also recorded in pearl millet GHB 732; followed by statistically similar hybrids namely HHB 223, GHB 744, XMT 1497 and PB 1705. Whereas, hybrid 86M86 registered the lowest values of growth/yield parameters including grain and biological yields. The higher numerical values of economic returns, viz. gross returns (₹91,476/ha), net profit (₹67,973/ha), benefit: cost ratio (2.89) and economic efficiency (₹765.5/ha/day) were also obtained from hybrid GHB 732. The attack of various diseases and insects was also lower in hybrid GHB 732 as compared to the other hybrids.
