The paddy yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas is a major pest affecting rice production, causing significant yield losses. This study investigates the morphological traits of rice that confer resistance to S. incertulas. To examine these traits 270 rice genotypes were screened at V.C. Farm, Mandya, Karnataka during Kharif 2022, Rabi 2022 and Summer 2023 and among them, 16 genotypes were selected for varied infestation levels. Key traits such as plant height, flag leaf dimensions, second leaf dimensions, spike length, panicle length, peduncle length, stem diameter, and trichome density were measured and analyzed for their correlation with resistance. The findings revealed a strong inverse relationship between plant height, flag leaf length, second leaf length, spike length, and resistance to S. incertulas infestation. Conversely, wider leaves and greater stem diameter were positively correlated with susceptibility. Increased trichome density also contributed significantly to resistance by deterring egg-laying and impeding larval movement. The study highlights the importance of morphological traits in breeding rice varieties with inherent resistance to the yellow stem borer, offering a sustainable alternative to chemical control methods. These findings contribute to pest management strategies aimed at enhancing rice productivity.
