Abstract

The present study was carried out in Gujarat Plains of India involving ‘TG 37A’ Spanish Bunch groundnut during rainy season 2022 and Spring-Summer 2023 to find out efficient weed control strategy through both reducing crop-weed competition and enhancing crop productivity. The study involved nine treatment combinations, involving different pre- and post-emergence herbicides along with desired checks, was laid out in a RCBD under field condition. Results indicated that the treatment, involving a pre-emergence (PRE) and a post emergence (PoE) herbicide combination viz., diclosulam 26 g/ha as PRE and fenoxaprop-p-ethyl 78 g/ha as PoE, was efficient in terms of efficient weed control, higher yield, and its attributes. This treatment resulted in realization of the highest pod yield of 2682 kg/ha in rainy season 2022 and 3245 kg/ha in Spring-Summer 2023 (compared to average yield of around 2 t/ha in India), showing an increment of 22.5 and 13.1%, respectively over those in recommended manual weed control with intercultural operation during the respective seasons. Furthermore, net economic returns, based on selling price of both pod and haulm yields, were also increased tremendously (by 30.5% in rainy season and 14.7% in Spring-Summer), with a corresponding surge in benefit cost ratios (BCR of 31.2% in the former and 8.74% in latter season) under this treatment compared to manual weed control. Other crop and weed growth attributes (weed control efficiency, weed index, and nodulation and NPK uptake by the crop) followed the similar trend as that of the pod yield. The study concludes that groundnut crop can be more remunerative through use of both Pre- and Post-emergence use of novel herbicides when weeds contributes around half of total yield loss of the crop.
