Abstract

The study aimed to assess land suitability for sustainable aquaculture development in
Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India, utilising a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) and GIS-based approach. In India, issues such as water and soil degradation, insufficient infrastructure and inadequate maintenance pose significant challenges to aquaculture growth. The research employed 15 base layers, including water quality, soil characteristics, engineering
parameters and high-resolution satellite imagery, analysed through the Analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and GIS-based multi-criteria evaluation. Results revealed 9.85% highly suitable and 35.09% unsuitable areas for fish farming, achieving an 80% overall accuracy through validation with satellite images and field visits. The study provides valuable insights for policy makers, farmers, and resource managers in selecting suitable sites for sustainable aquaculture, enhancing resource management in the region.
