The society was founded in 1987 with the following mandates:

• To serve and promote the scientific cause and to advance academic interest in the field of plant genetic resources.
• To disseminate the knowledge relating to various aspects on plant genetic resources.
• To provide a forum for organizing symposia/conferences with a view to develop close relationship among the scientists engaged and interested in plant genetic resources activity.
