Abstract

Scarabaeidae is an economically important family of Coleoptera that comprises white grubs and dung rollers. White grubs also known as May or June beetles are serious pests of several commercial crops and considered as a pest of national importance owing to its widespread occurrence and difficulty in management. To address this challenge, a thorough understanding of white grubs species diversity, distribution and dynamics along with diagnostics is important. The paper presents documentation of white grubs species diversity (region wise and crop wise) carried out through preliminary surveys and explorations by the author. Important diagnostic characters to distinguish Scarabeidae up to subfamily level are also furnished which can aid in easy identification of phytophagous scarab species at both adult and larval stages.
